There is so much depth that goes into the “Basics of Christianity” but here is 10 that can help you get a clear understanding! ( Now these responses are not the totality or the be-all of the answer but this can help guide you to get a better understanding. Reading the word for yourself and asking more questions will help you build on your understanding).
1. What is a Christian? “A follower of Christ”. The definition of a Christian is a person who is a believer in Jesus Christ and his teachings. Becoming a Christian is more than just going to church or saying a prayer. We believe it is a personal walk and relationship with Him. We believe He is the only creator of the universe, protector of all evil, and our provider in life. “For this is what the Lord says- he who created the heavens, is God; he who fashion and made the earth, he founded it; …..I am the Lord and there is no other.” Isaiah 45:18 .
2. So who is this God you pray to? We believe he is the creator of the universe who guides and protects us daily. We believe in the Trinity of God (God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit) <- So he is three persons?? This is all one person. He is the same God. It is a description or [a relationship if you will]of who God is. Don’t get it? Let’s relate it to You. Say your name is Mike. Mike who is a Father, the same Mike who loves to give service to others, and the same Mike who is a wonderful presence to be around.
3. Now let’s relate it back to God. So in essence, God the Father (our creator and “heavenly” Father),God the Son, God came down in the form of a human being (named Jesus) to save us from our sins. Jesus means “the Lord saves” or some refer to him as “Our Savior”, and the Holy Spirit (Gods spiritual presence with us ).
4. How do you know he is the creator of the Universe? We believe the bible to be true, as their may appear to be contradictions within the Word, but we believe the Bible to be the inspired from [God himself] “the Word of God”. With that said, in the bible Genesis 1:1 says “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” [ Read the Story of God’s creation in Genesis 1:1-2:3] We don’t believe the earth “just happened” or “evolved” somehow.
5. Why did he create the world? We believe it was an expression of his love for the World and for people and that we are valuable in his eyes because he took the time to create us. So who created God? We believe he is an infinite being and created by no one since he is the “creator”. It’s hard for people to understand this for even Jesus says “the World cannot accept him because it neither sees him nor knows him.” John 14:17. The bible doesn’t explain how God was created in the Bible but we believe whenever we get to heaven he will answer all of our questions and so much more!
6. What do you mean when you say “God came down as a human being to save us from sin?? Where did sin come from? [Read the Story of Adam and Eve in Genesis 2:1-3:24] Sin started when Eve disobeyed God by eating the forbidden fruit and then shared it with Adam, God punished them and their offspring which affected all creation “which is us”. So why are we being punished for something THEY did? God was setting a standard and/or message to us all that disobedience is a sin.
7. Jesus Christ, God the son, was born without any trace from human sin that was passed on to all other human beings by Adam & Eve disobedience, because he was born of a woman, a virgin named Mary, through the Holy spirit thus making him fully human and fully divine. [Read the Birth of Jesus in Matthew 1:18-22]
8. God saved us from sin by dying on the cross because back in the bible days there was a complicated system for when a person sinned. Only through sacrifice of an animal could people be forgiven from God. But Jesus became the ultimate and final sacrifice when he came down to pay the penalty for our sins through his death. Jesus came to finish God’s work of salvation.
9. My friend said they were “saved” what does that mean? It means when someone has asked God to forgive them of their sins {this is called repentance}, they have accepted God into their lives, and starts with a clean slate on their christian walk with God. The old things and ways of what they did in the past no longer matters because God has already forgiven them. What is the benefit of being saved? In John 1:12 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. So how do I know if I am saved? Do you believe the above #1- 9 to all be true? Then you are saved, if not keep reading more about him for yourself.
10. Where is Jesus now? He said before he was crucified “I am going away and I am coming back to you. If you loved me you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is Greater than I” John 14:28
